Injection Mould and Hot Runner

The injection mould is composed of several steel plates and various parts. It is basically divided into:
A. Molding device
B. Positioning device
C. Fixtures
D. Cooling system
E. Constant temperature system
F. Flow channel system
G. Ejection system

According to the different types of pouring systems, plastic injection moulds can be divided into three categories:

1. Edge gate mold:

The runners and gates are on the parting line and are demoulded together with the product when opening the mold. The design is simple, easy to process, and the cost is low, so more people use the edge gate system for operations.


2. Pin-point gate mold:

The runner and gate are not on the parting line, usually directly on the product, so it is necessary to design an additional set of pin-point parting lines. The design is more complex and the processing is more difficult. Generally, the pin-point gate mold should be selected according to the product requirements.


3. Hot runner mold:

The structure of this type of plastic mould is roughly the same as that of pin-point gate mold. The biggest difference is that the runner is located in one or more hot runner plates and hot spouts with constant temperature. There is no cold material demoulding, runner and pouring. The port is directly on the product, so the runner does not need to be demoulded. This system is also called a no-water port system, which can save raw materials and is suitable for situations where raw materials are expensive, product requirements are high, design and processing are difficult, and mold costs are high.


Disadvantages of hot runner system application

1. The overall injection moulding closing height is increased. Due to the installation of hot runner plates, etc., the overall mold height is increased.

2. Thermal radiation is difficult to control. The biggest problem with hot runner is the heat loss of the runner, which is a major issue that needs to be solved.

3. There is thermal expansion. Thermal expansion and contraction are issues we need to consider when designing.

4. The cost of mold manufacturing increases, and the price of standard parts of the hot runner system is higher, which affects the popularity of hot runner molds.
